Downloading resources and unzipping files
NGfL Cymru Downloads overview
The process of making all of NGfL Cymru's original materials downloadable is now well under way. The reasoning behind this is so that you have the option of not having to run the activity online, but download it to your machine, and use it from there. This is especially useful if you do not have access to a high-speed internet connection. This is done by zipping up the whole of the resource into one file, which you then download, save to your hard drive, then extract / unzip it, which then makes it ready for use.
How do I download the resource and make it usable?
- The link to the downloadable zip file is found on the front page of the resource, and is normally at the bottom of the page.
- This file has to be saved to your hard drive:
- On a Windows®-based machine, right-click the mouse and 'Save target as...'
- On a Mac® , <Ctrl>+click and select the save option.
- Once the zipped file has been saved to your hard drive, it then has to be extracted i.e., unzipped. If you do not unzip this file, the resource will not work correctly. Please follow your software's instructions for unzipping.
- There are a number of programs that will allow you to unzip / extract these files. Windows® XP has a built-in extraction program. If you are unsure how to use this, go to the 'Help and Support' in Windows® and type in "extracting files" in the search box. This will then bring up a 'How to...' for you to follow.
- Examples of other programs capable of extracting zipped files are Winzip and Winrar. Other programs are also available by entering "zip files" in your internet search engine.
- Once unzipped, the resource is ready for use. Within the folder that has been created for your resource, the file 'Start Here' should be used - this gives access to all sections of the resource, from which you are able to use the drop-down menus or the 'next' and 'back' buttons as if you are using it online.
